Leonard Cohen DVD

The Leonard Cohen film Leonard Cohen: Bird On A Wire (1972) was supposed to be released today on DVD. But it's been pushed back to September 7th, according to the folks at Amoeba.

For those in L.A., of course Amoeba is charging a bit more than everyone else: $18.99. For those of you in Massachusetts, it's best to get it at Newbury Comics, which is selling it for $11.88. (Yes, Newbury Comics is one of my favorite places on the planet.)

The Brian Kinler Band, Anita & The Yanks, Evangina

A correction: The Brian Kinler Band is not playing in Pasadena tomorrow night (or tonight, by the time anyone reads this). The band's next gig is September 18th, at Vitello's in Studio City, CA. What better way to celebrate Yom Kippur?

For those looking for something to do tomorrow night (or tonight), Anita & The Yanks are playing at the Novel Cafe, which is at 1713 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. (It's a free show.) I saw this band on St. Patrick's Day, and i absolutely loved them.

And then Saturday night there is a lot going on in Los Angeles. But one gig you might not already be aware of: Evangina is playing at Pehrspace, 325 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Evangina is the name Juli and Lisa of The Evangenitals use when they do their acoustic sets. These are fairly rare shows, and they're always phenomenal.

200th Article On Suite101

I posted my 200th article on Suite101 today. It's a review of the Yonder Mountain String Band concert at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, CA on 8-20-10. A great show, by the way. Here is the link: http://www.suite101.com/content/yonder-mountain-string-band-in-west-hollywood---concert-review-a277057

My 100th article had been a review of Yonder Mountain's Elevation CD, so i figured i'd sort of make it a tradition of sorts. I can be silly that way.

I have a lot of articles in the works, including an interview with David Daskal of Xyzyx. I still have several new CDs to review, including four more Judy Collins albums. And soon i should be receiving those new Jefferson Airplane CDs. So yeah, i'll be busy listening to lots of music. Hurrah for that.

Yonder Mountain String Band 8-12-10 Concert Review

I just finished and posted my review of last night's Yonder Mountain String Band concert. It was a great show (this band is always excellent). Here is the link: http://bluegrass-music.suite101.com/article.cfm/yonder-mountain-string-band-in-anaheim-concert-review

Yonder Mountain String Band in Anaheim

Yonder Mountain String Band did a great show tonight at the House Of Blues in Anaheim. This was the first show of a short tour, and was also the first time the band ever played in Anaheim. They played a lot of wonderful original material like "Another Day" and "Southbound," as well as some great covers, such as "Only A Northern Song" and "No Expectations."

The show ended with "Death Trip," because a girl had blown up a balloon and written some of the lyrics to the song on it, then tossed it up onto the stage. An interesting way to request a song. And it worked.

I plan to write a review of the show and post it on Suite101.

New Jerry Garcia Tribute Album

There is a new tribute album titled Jerry Jams For Rex. It's a compilation of live recordings by different bands, such as Yonder Mountain String Band, The String Cheese Incident and Phish. And the album is a benefit for the Rex Foundation.

The Rex Foundation was established in 1983 as a non-profit charitable organization by members of the Grateful Dead and their friends. The Grateful Dead did many benefit concerts over the years for the Rex Foundation.

Jerry Jams For Rex was released yesterday, and is available on CD and as a download. There are three bonus tracks on the download version.

I'll be writing a review of this compilation shortly and posting it on Suite101. But the tracks i've listened to so far are all excellent.

The Evangenitals at Kulak's Woodshed, 8-14-10

The Evangenitals will be playing one of the more interesting venues in Los Angeles this Saturday. Kulak's Woodshed. The place has a strange vibe, and has had its share of problems. Neighbors, parking, money - the usual. But they keep it going somehow, out of love for the music.

For anyone who hasn't seen this band, now is a good time to go to your first show. They have some great new material, and Juli is writing lots of songs these days.

Kulak's Woodshed is located at 5230 1/2 Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91607.

There will also be a live webcast, for those who can't make it.

Allan Sherman Albums Re-Issued

Today I posted my fourth (and most likely final) review of the Allan Sherman albums. There are eight albums being re-issued on September 7th, but I received only four of them. The reviews are on Suite101, but here are the links:

- My Son, The Folk Singer (1962): http://folkmusic.suite101.com/article.cfm/allan-sherman-my-son-the-folk-singer-19622010-re-issue
- My Son, The Celebrity (1963): http://50s-60s-pop-music.suite101.com/article.cfm/allan-sherman-my-son-the-celebrity--19632010-re-issue
- My Son, The Nut (1963): http://50s-60s-pop-music.suite101.com/article.cfm/allan-sherman-my-son-the-nut--19632020-re-issue
- For Swingin' Livers Only! (1964): http://50s-60s-pop-music.suite101.com/article.cfm/allan-sherman-for-swingin-livers-only--19642010-re-issue

All four of these albums are good. All four will provide plenty of laughter.

The Evangenitals in San Luis Obispo - Tonight

Whenever i type "San Luis Obispo," it just doesn't look right. I always have to check the spelling. "Obispo" just looks wrong. Perhaps it's time to change the name of your town.

But before you get on that, go out tonight and see The Evangenitals. This is their first show in your oddly named town, so go out and support them. After all, they'd do the same for you. Also, they're simply an incredible band. And they have some new material they're going to unleash upon you folks. So get ready.

Here is the information:

The Clubhouse At This Old House
740 W. Foothill Blvd.
San Luis Obispo, CA
8 p.m.

They're doing two sets, and the cover is only $5. Can you beat that? Don't even try.

New Jefferson Airplane Albums

Yes, yes, yes. Four new Jefferson Airplane albums are going to be released in October. All four are live recordings, and one of them even has the original singer (yes, the chick before Grace Slick joined the band). And one of the CDs is Grace Slick's first show with Airplane.

Anyone who knows me knows that i'm basically leaping out of my own skin with excitement over this. Hurrah for Collector's Choice Music for releasing these CDs. And of course as soon as i get them, i'll be writing reviews and posting them on Suite101.
